Running a Result Day Without a War Room

Most of the pressure on result day comes from work that could have been finished a week earlier. Here is the order we settled on.

Result day is rarely difficult because of the arithmetic. It is difficult because three or four unfinished jobs — a missing internal mark, an unverified name spelling, a subject that was added late — all come due on the same morning, and each one has to be chased by the person who happens to know about it.

The order that works is boring. Freeze the register a week out and let corrections happen against a named list rather than in conversation. Enter internals as they are assessed instead of collecting them at the end. Run a mock publish on the real data two days early, print ten grade sheets at random and read them properly.

What that buys you is a result day with no discovery in it. Everything left is mechanical: compute, verify the totals against the mock, publish, print. The staff who used to spend the day answering questions spend it checking output, which is the job you actually wanted them doing.
